SODIUM THIOSULFATE PENTAHYDRATE is a water soluble salt and reducing agent that reacts with oxidizing agents, also used as an analytical reagent in laboratories. Although its exact mechanism of action is unknown, thiosulfate likely provides an exogenous source of sulfur, thereby hastening the detoxification of cyanide through the enzyme rhodanese (thiosulfate cyanide sulfurtransferase) which converts cyanide to the relatively nontoxic, excretable thiocyanate ion. In addition, this agent neutralizes the reactive alkylating species of nitrogen mustard, thereby decreasing skin toxicity related to nitrogen mustard extravasation (NCI04). Furthermore, it is used to dechlorinate tap water, for removing free bromine from solutions and to check the pH of bleach solutions with liquid indicators.

Drinking Water Treatment - Potassium Permanganate
Potassium permanganate is a point-of-entry treatment method that oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into solid particles that are filtered out of the water. It can also be used to control iron bacteria growth in wells.
 
How potassium permanganate works
Potassium permanganate is available as a dry, purplish solid. A device injects a solution of potassium permanganate into the water between the water pump and holding tank. Potassium permanganate oxidizes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into particles. The particles are then filtered with a multimedia filter which can be either manganese-coated aluminum silicate above manganese-treated green sand or an 8-inch layer of anthracite above manganese-treated greensand. If an insufficient amount of iron, manganese, or hydrogen sulfide is oxidized prior to filtration, the manganese coating on the filter media acts as a backup oxidant to treat any remaining contaminant. If too much potassium permanganate is fed into the water prior to filtration, the excess potassium permanganate serves as a regenerant for the filter media. The water should be colorless when it leaves the filter.
When treating water to remove iron bacteria, a solution of potassium permanganate is fed into the well. A concentration of 3.8 to 7.6 grams per gallon has been found to be very effective. After the solution is added in the well, continuous agitation will help loosen and disintegrate sediment and organic material produced by the bacteria, thus enhancing treatment effectiveness. Agitation can be accomplished by turning the well on and off, which brings water up through the well casing and then lets it fall back into the well.

Medical Uses for Potassium Permanganate
When mixed into liquid form, potassium permanganate treats skin conditions, fungal infections and ulcers. It also has a history of treating allergic reactions involving hair dyes. Potassium permanganate treats many skin infections, including eczema, canker sores, dermatitis, acne, vaginal thrush and vulvovaginitis. Potassium permanganate foot soaks treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot. Symptoms of these conditions include itching or burning, usually between the toes, as well as redness or a scaly skin appearance associated with the feeling as if your foot is on fire. The majority of commercially available permanent hair dyes contain a non-oxidized dye that is mixed with an oxidizer or developer.

After thorough cleaning, the stainless steel part is ready for immersion in a passivating acid bath. Any one of three approaches can be used--nitric acid passivation, nitric acid with sodium dichromate passivation and citric acid passivation. Which approach to use depends on the grade of stainless steel and prescribed acceptance criteria.

More resistant chromium-nickel grades can be passivated in a 20 percent-by-volume nitric acid bath . As indicated in the same table, less resistant stainless grades can be passivated by adding sodium dichromate to the nitric acid bath to make the solution more oxidizing and capable of forming a passive film on the surface.

Another option, used in place of nitric acid plus sodium dichromate, is to increase the concentration of nitric acid to 50 percent-by-volume , The sodium dichromate addition and lit : higher nitric acid concentration both reduce the chance of undesirable flash attack.
